Ep 45: How to Deal with Financial Stress in Retirement
RetirementOn This Episode
Psychologists have determined that retirement is the 10th most stressful event that you can experience in life. Today we’re sharing some ways to proactively deal with that stress.
Takeaways
On today’s Saving With Silverman podcast, Mark Silverman CFP® shares why retirement can be so stressful and how to deal with that stress in a healthy way.
First, you need to understand the significant lifestyle changes that come with retirement, such as:
- No longer on the clock.
- No more meetings.
- No more deadlines and projects.
- No more sales calls.
- No more work-related travel.
- No more co-worker drama.
All of these things sound like great things to get rid of, but anytime your life is changing so drastically, it can be stressful. The transition into retirement for a lot of people has stress related to it.
Some people want to retire earlier than planned and not deal with drama at work anymore. Others want to extend their working career because they now have the flexibility to work from home.
When you retire, you don’t eliminate challenges from your life, you just start tackling new ones. Find the challenges that you enjoy facing and the ones that keep you engaged.
Just because you’re not working doesn’t mean you’re going to sleep all day or sit on the couch and watch TV. At the same time, be sure that you create enough opportunities to just relax.
My most successful, happy retired clients are the ones who tell me they are busier now than when they were working. I can put a plan together for your money, but you need to put a plan together for your time.
In older generations, people often worked until they died. Retirement is a fairly new concept. We can help guide you as you prepare for this important time.
