RetirementOn This Episode
This show is all about planning for retirement and making sure you’re doing it the right way so you can have the kind of retirement lifestyle you always dreamed of. Today we’ll share what the stages are.
Takeaways
On today’s Saving With Silverman podcast, Mark explains the different phases of preparing for retirement and what you need to know to get ready. Whether you’re planning to retire someday or already in retirement, we can help you create a plan that suits your needs.
15 years before retirement
In your early 50s, you’re about 15 years away from retirement, and you still have a decent amount of time. You want to look at risk and income streams. Do you have a pension, rental properties, Social Security, annuities? Also look at your debts and cash flow.
10 years before retirement
Social Security is still going to be a big one. You should have a more accurate picture of what your Social Security looks like. We can do an analysis to show you when you should take Social Security. Also, you want to make sure you’re not taking too much risk with your investments.
5 years before retirement
It’s important to understand where we are marketwise. For example, people who retired in 2007 versus 2009, they had two different experiences based on where the market was and where their assets were.
The day you retire
The day of your retirement is finally here, and you better make sure you have a plan for your finances. You need to understand your income streams and where your money is coming from.
5-10 years after retirement
At this point, we have a better idea of what you’re spending and can make sure you have enough income.

A lot of people say, ‘How much am I going to need in retirement?’ … For most people, they’re going to spend the same in retirement as they did in their working years.
